LAB ADMINISTRATOR ( Contract Job) Job Description ESSENTIALS:
-3+ years experience in technical support/training of UNIX and NT system-level products.
-Experience of php/Perle
-Experience of UNIX Scripting utilising AWK, sed, grep, ksh
-Experience of database tools (scripting and coding interfaces into databases)
-Web programming cgi skills
-Solid knowledge of Windows, Solaris, and/or HP-UX is essential as is experience of delivering curriculum on a variety of UNIX and Windows platforms.
-Experience of Backup technologies particularly BE (BackupExec) or NBU (Netbackup)
-A good understanding of hardware architecture including experience of hardware management, configuration and confidence in different types of hardware like tape libraries, disk arrays, etc.
-Previous experience of clustering, SCSI and/or SAN technologies.
-Working knowledge of DNS, NIS and PDC configuration and maintenance.
-Some experience of network security and associated technology.
-Knowledge of network connectivity.
-Installation and rollout of servers including confidence in jumpstart, ignite and other disk imaging/recovery technologies.

Desired Profile RESPONSIBILITIES:
The role of Lab Administrator is to provide test facilities to the Support Teams by configuring, administering, and maintaining a mix of UNIX and Windows operating systems in a problem recreation lab environment. These systems will use fibre connectivity extensively and will be accessible both locally and remotely for recreating problems with VERITAS products, primarily NetBackup (NBU), and Backup Exec. The Lab Administrator is also responsible for liaising with and managing third party suppliers, negotiating prices and ensuring deliveries match orders.
• To analyse current manual administration and automation functions and provide optimised scripted or code based utilities.
• To enhance current and produce new web applications for use within GSL and to the wider support audience.
• To be fully accountable for the functionality and availability of the Support test resources.
• To be responsible for the any issues/queries, resource and configuration of test environments as requested by the technical support population.
• Set up of any test platforms/problems 1st line/2nd line need to replicate, e.g. the need for backup exec on a Win2K box connected to a Solaris box for testing of the UNIX agent.
• Maintain an image server that acts as a repository for current baseline images of all test machines.
• To publish a list of available resources in the lab with details of how to connect/remote administer them from the test network.
• To ensure that broken kit is repaired or replaced and identify any issues for the maintenance contracts and warranty aspects of all test kit.
• Suggest possible partners/suppliers for the resource of equipment where possible.
• Maintain support contracts and place support calls as needed on new and existing equipment.
• Control and maintain an up-to-date library of product releases, service packs, hotfixes, patches, etc.
• Control and maintain a local library of software applications, books, and other reference material.
• Install and maintain all lab equipment - troubleshoot and repair faulty equipment as needed whether it be hardware or software related.
• Monitor production servers to include software and/or hardware upgrades as well as upgrading the operating system and performing regular backups. Ensure that systems and arrays are accessible remotely (via console ports and/or fibre switches).
• Work with other Lab Administrators to maintain the virtual lab, ensuring local resources are available globally.
• Identify and implement improvements to both existing and required lab processes.
• Anticipate power, air conditioning, space and network needs for the lab facility and desktop systems. Work with Facilities, IS&T, and Support Lab Planner to make sure that those needs are met. Be available via pager or cell phone on a rotating basis to cover 24/7 lab issues.
• Attend regular meetings with representatives of the Technical Support teams to determine issues and review lab status. Feed any issues raised during these meetings back to the Lab Manager.
• Attend regular meetings with Global Lab teams and Lab Manager to provide updates and issue feedback.
• Submit weekly reports to the Lab Manager on progress towards project goals.
• Submit monthly reports to the Global Lab newsletter editor for inclusion in the monthly newsletter on the state of the lab.
• Manage the networking infrastructure within the lab including the administration of the various VLANs deployed.
• Manage the Storage Area Network within the lab, ensuring that all zoning information is kept up to date.
• Work with the Lab purchase planners to source equipment, obtain quotes, place purchase orders, receive deliveries, asset inventory and approve payment of invoices.
• Perform any other duties as may be required by the Lab Manager.
